Chosen as one of our #W24Tastemakers, Anja van der Spuy is a Digital Consultant at SconeTent and The Foschini Group and also runs her very own successful blog, Glitzandgrammar.com.
We asked her a few questions:
1. What inspired you to do what you do?
To be honest; boredom did! I wasn’t very happy in my first job, and I needed some creative outlet – so I started my blog to have a space to write without restriction.
2. Who do you admire and why?
I work with women who conquer the corporate world and motherhood at the same time. They come to work looking absolutely fierce every morning, and it inspires me so much.
3. If there’s one thing you could change about being a woman, what would it be?
HORMONES! I envy men that they (mostly) only have to worry about external factors affecting their mood. With us there’s a constant internal battle.
4. In the news story of your life, what would the headline read?
Tall girl walks into glass door, hair and make-up still perfect
5. What superpower would you want?
I would like the power to turn my body into a WIFI hotspot. What? I’m a quintessential millennial, okay.
6. If you had to choose one item from your closet and wear it every day, which item would this be and why?
I have a leather skirt from Zara that’s basically been attached to my body this whole winter. It’s highwaisted and so versatile – I can wear it with a crop top in summer and it’d still look fab.
7. You are very humorous in your writing, what makes you laugh out loud?
Nothing makes me laugh louder than Twitter. I find myself snort-laughing at people’s tweets all the time!
8. Describe your weekend style in three words.
Lazy, but cute.
9. You are a big social media influencer, how do you handle negative feedback and trolls online?
I have a filter on my blog which allows me to approve or delete comments. I always approve comments, however - even the negative ones. I believe that it would take away from my ‘realness’ if I delete negative comments. But that doesn’t mean they don’t affect me – they just don’t affect me as much as they used to. Back in the day when I just started my blog, I used to be so hurt when I received negative comments online. Now I read it out loud to my friends/colleagues, laugh or rant about it and then move on. The truth is that people will always have something negative to say, but that shouldn’t cancel out all the positivity. I prefer to focus on the: “Anja, your blog makes me laugh on bad days” comments.
