The idea behind setting manageable goals to achieve in a year can be problematic if you don't acknowledge that the outcomes of your goals are based on your behaviour and that your behaviour comes from your emotions, says Warren Munitz, founder of Integrative Life Coaching.

"While thoughts help us to focus our mind, it is truly our unconscious feelings that drive our actions.

We need the right support and guidance and we require a routine and discipline to implement exercises that will help us to expand our awareness of our unconscious, explains Munitz.

Here are a few apps to help us along the way:

Read more in less time with Blinkist

Have you had your bookmark on page 25 of your book for the past three weeks and simply don't have the time to finish reading it? Then you should download Blinkist – an app that can fill the gap and that hosts more than 2 000 best-selling non-fiction books.

You can switch between audio and text and a fifteen-minute read or listen as it summarises the core content of the book instead of reading or having the entire book read to you.

Good to know: If you need motivation to get reading, know that studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated through reading can slow down the progress of Alzheimer's development – a disease that approximately 750 000 South Africans suffer from – since keeping your brain active prevents it from losing power.

Get period-organised with Period Tracker

There's nothing worse than miscalculating your menstrual period and getting an unexpected surprise at the worst possible time.

Period Tracker will have you avoid those "no, not today!" moments. I've been using it for over two years and I can safely say that it's mostly accurate and perfect if you're too lazy to do a manual charting of your period.

It sends you a reminder of when your next period is scheduled to arrive, along with other cool information like knowing your chance of pregnancy, seeing your cycle history and it allows you to record your moods and symptoms.

Budget with Spending Tracker

If there were ever a task to go perfectly hand-in-hand with drudgery, it's budgeting. No ones likes doing it, but we know organising our finances carefully helps us save those needed pennies for a rainy day. But budgeting doesn't have to be painful anymore.

If you're constantly scratching all the way to the bottom of your handbag for that extra R5, then this is the app you need to download right now.

You can log expenses and income, receive tips that include money saving offers, see the history of your spending, optionally set a fixed budget amount to help you meet your spending targets and it includes graphs to give you a greater visual of where your money is going.

Eager to get creative in the kitchen this year but don't have a reliable source of inspiration? Kitchen Stories has hundreds of recipes for delicious, easy-to-cook meals.

The app has simple step-by-step photo and video tutorials that explain basic tips, has quick to prepare 20-minute dishes that include vegan and gluten-free recipe ideas, and new recipes and videos are added every week – for free. One of their new features also allows you to sort recipes by date, prep time, and calories, as well as popularity.
