There's pretty much nothing more annoying than having your fully charged iPhone go from 100% to 20% in a matter of hours.

Living in a world where you have no phone because the battery ran out can be quite daunting. You can't avoid awkward conversation by texting away at no one, you can't find your way around because you can't use maps and you can't take Snaps of your everyday moments -- all because your battery couldn't last 24 hours.

To help you avoid these horrors, we have compiled a list of practical ways you can boost your iPhone's battery life and help it charge faster:

  1. Reduce background app refreshing

It might seem really convenient to have your apps refresh constantly on their own but if you want a long-lasting battery this is a convenience you can definitely live without.

Also, just swiping away to close your apps does not mean that they are not refreshing themselves in the background still. Apps such as Facebook, Instagram, etc, still run in the background even if you can't see that they are. A full-proof way of preventing this is following this path: Settings > General > Background App refresh and from there you can switch off this function on apps of your choice -- but we suggest all of them.

 2.  Invest in a good charger

Almost nothing will mess up your battery more than a knock-off charger. The iPhone chargers that you can buy on the side of the road won't do your phone any good -- they may lead to your overheating and can damage your battery over time.

Although portable charging stations may help in the case of emergencies, you should not use them consistently.

Always invest in getting a genuine charger from Apple, this will save you a lot of stress.

3.  Turn off your location

Unless you're using maps, there really isn't a need for locations to be on. Not only do they really drain your battery life but they track you ALL THE TIME -- which is rather terrifying when you think about it.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and turn them all off, or just select apps you don't want tracking you.

You should also look in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services, and think about turning off Frequent Locations, 'Location-Based Aids', and maybe Diagnostics & Usage

  4.  Kill the vibration

This feature is really good if you're in a noisy place and won't be able to hear your phone when it goes off, or when you're keen to keep the sounds your device emits to a minimum,

In Settings > Sounds you can toggle Vibrate On Ring to Off or you could go to Settings > Sounds > New Mail > Vibration and set it to None.

5. Turn off your notifications

It might be really nice to get notified immediately when someone follows you, gives you a like or comments on your social media accounts instantly but if you're trying to battery savvy, this will not help at all.

Whether it's e-mails, WhatsApps or messages from Tinder, putting your push notifications on mean that your phone is never actually "hibernating". It is better to do everything manually if you want to save your battery life.

Go to settings > notification centre and tap on any apps you don't want notifications from. Then choose 'none' under the alert style, and turn 'badge icon' and 'sounds' off.
