7 things we all lie about on social media

accreditation

Let’s be honest - we all lie on social media - be it about where we are, what we are doing or who we are hanging out with.

Most of us exaggerate things to seem more fun. We highlight certain details to receive sympathy, downplay others to seem more glam and sometimes we even post those awful attention-seeking statuses.

So what are the most common things people lie about on the internet?

1. How we look

Truth be told, we all upload filtered photos of ourselves online. I mean, why upload an original image when there are more flattering options?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that if you are posting them on your own social network profile, but if it’s for a dating site you may be setting up your date for a rather awkward first encounter.

2. How much fun we are having

Youre the only single at a party full of couples who can’t get over each other and you take a picture of yourself and caption it “best night ever” even though you left at 8pm.

Or you go on a vacation and it rains 13 out of the 14 days you were there, but you still upload a picture of the sunset that appeared for two minutes on the very last night of your vac, making people believe that you had the best time of your life. People are on to you...

3. How many fans we have

We all have that one person on our Instagram feeds pretending to have many fans and always posting photos with the caption “a lot of people have been asking me…” even though they only have 100 followers and no one really knows them.

4. Our age

You have to be a certain age in order to sign up for most social networks, but  according to  The Kernel 80% of children lie about their age in order to get into social networking sites. Some people lie about their age because they don’t want to reveal their personal information and some people just lie because a lot of humans on the internet are psychos.

5. Your relationship status

I think we all have lied about our relationship status on social media at one point. Sometimes you’re not ready to claim the guy you’ve been hanging out with for months so your relationship status stays ‘single’.

Another common lie people tell on Facebook is changing their relationship status to ‘it’s complicated’ when they've not been close to what anyone can call a relationship for months, or even years.

6. How perfect our lives are

This has to be the most common lie told on social media every single day.  People always pretend as if they are living awesome lives, they brag about things they don’t even have.

The “vacations” they take, the romance between them and their partners and the amazing friends they (don’t) have, when in reality their lives are chaotic, messy, and much lonelier than the ones they project on social media.

7. Our hobbies

Taking pictures of food is quite popular on social media and you will find that most of the people who do this can barely cook, but once they get it right they make sure the whole world knows, this is fine until people invite themselves over to your place for lunch.

There are also people who only go to gym to take mirror selfies. Well we’ve got news for you: if you are taking selfies at the gym, you are probably not working out.

What lies have you (or your friends) told on social media? Don’t worry, we can keep it anonymous.
