Beware of Facebook scams

There are a number of scams out there that aren’t always obvious to spot. By simply liking a page or an app you might find yourself falling prey to scammers that can (amongst other things) use your profile to spread viruses across the web.

Even worse, these hackers can easily gain access to your private details and even use them to hack into your other personal accounts.

We’ve compiled a list of the top 5 Facebook scams that users should be aware of at the moment:

Celebrity scandal stories

Hackers will use fake stories of popular celebs that will most likely get you curious and clicking away. The famous fake ‘Rihanna sexy tape’ scam is known to have taken users to a number of survey sites that require you to share personal info in order to view the alleged sex tape.

“See who is viewing your profile”

How many of those have you spotted popping up in  your news feed? This scam actually asks that you tag some friends in the “Wow, I can see who viewed my profile” scam and then shows up on your friend’s walls as well.

Another popular scam is the “Hello pink Facebook” that claims that you can change your FB colour settings.

Free products

Let’s face it: nothing is free. You at least have to enter a competition in order to win something. As much as it is nice to be showered with free goods, ads that claim you have won something should be seen as a hoax.

 ‘Access my basic information’

When linking your account to another application there’s usually a box that pops up and asks to access your profile info, and some might also ask that you enter your email address and password.

Beware of these apps as a legitimate application would not ask you to give any password of any kind.

Fake Friend Requests

This is the latest FB scam that many people are easily falling victim to. You receive a friend request from someone that is already your friend, and of course you don’t think twice about accepting.

The imposter, however, uses the fake profile to ask for money or gain personal information. Make sure that this is a real account before you accept.

Remember, new scams are created every day – so always be aware. If something seems dodgy, it usually is. Click here to see how you can stay safe and protect yourself online.
