Can cellphones alleviate poverty?

The study also revealed that cellphone subscriptions will reach five billion this year. In developing countries the subscription rate is calculated to be at 58 per 100 people and in least developed countries it has risen to 25 per 100 people up from the 2 per 100 people a few years ago.

The economic benefits of the use of mobile phones in the least developed countries outstrips the use of other technological usage such as land line and internet services, reports the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

The success of the mobile phone is benefited by the fact that it is affordable, says the report. The cellphone industry has helped provide people with little or no education with some form of employment.

Do you think the rise in cellphones will  alleviate poverty in poor countries?
