Nike+ Run Club

Free on iTunes and Google Play

Whether you’re a struggling newbie like me or a seasoned athlete, training with a running app will add a new and valuable dimension to your routine. There are a few of these on the market, but most of them (such as Strava) require a monthly paid subscription. Nike+ Run Club is not only completely free, it operates just as well as Strava.

You can track the total distance and time of your run, and how long it takes you to complete 1km. A cool little map shows your route, and green, yellow, orange and red areas indicate your speed at different stages.

If you invest in a heart monitor, the app will also show you your heart rate. Another nifty motivational tool is that the app gives you little digital medals for achieving certain goals. For instance, for your fastest run, your longest run, your fastest 1km, 5km or 10km and so on.

At the end of each run, you enter a star rating to indicate how hard you thought the run was, and can even add a post-run selfie.

Having an app that tracks your progress, awards achievements and adds fun new dimensions to your training is a great way to motivate you to keep putting on those takkies and hitting the road.

Do you use exercise apps and do you find that they help you stay motivated?
