Everyone loves it when their outfits make a statement, and this year has been all about wearing daring pieces of clothing that act as the main event of your outfit.

While you’d usually think of accessories like neckpieces, earrings or shoes, the trend this season is the statement skirt.

Bold structures, flare shapes, loud prints and shiny metallics are at the forefront – and the best part is that once you select the right larger-than-life skirt, your outfit will automatically speak for itself.

Here are some of our favourites from Spree.co.za:

ASYMMETRICAL SKIRTS

A hot trend is the uneven skirt. There are some fun oversized ruffle hems for dramatic, floaty designs that make asymmetrical skirts the unique, beautiful and interesting clothing item that they are.

Asymmetrical skirts are one of the most versatile pieces because they can be worn in warm and cold weather. In summer, an asymmetrical skirt looks great with a simple T-shirt or tank top with a pair of sandals or even sneakers.

Stay away from decorative shoes because they will take attention away from your skirt.

DEBUTANTE AND TULLE SKIRTS

It has been well over a decade since we cared about the fashion of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, but one thing that has stuck and that we can thank her for is the tulle skirt.

The structure of the tulle and debutante skirt when worn more casually is flirty and fun – and layering a tulle over denim jeans is one to try this season.

Debutante skirts aren’t only one of the more romantic skirts around, they can also be a symbol of rebellion to the “girly fashion” it has been subscribed to. Wear it with a statement tee, casual tanks and sneakers.

FLARED SKIRTS

Flared skirts have dominated on catwalks, streets and fancy parties lately. It’s probably not the most popular style, but it looks nice and stylish – if you know how to wear it, that is.

There are tons of flared-skirt designs, but one thing they all have in common is the shape that flares out towards the hem.

However, remember to think about your outfit’s proportion – you need to define your waist and create a stylish silhouette that will flatter your body.

MAXI SKIRTS

Maxi skirts are hands down one of the most comfortable staples in your closet, but they can often seem so one-dimensional. How long should it be? How do you pull it off with closed-toe shoes? Can you wear it with more than just a tank top?

The trick is to make sure your maxi is structured with an A-line and a fitted waist – it shouldn’t be the straight-hanging maxi you’d wear to a braai. For those days, wear a flowy crop with this skirt.
