Shopping Jo'burg: an insider’s guide to neighbourhood gems

accreditation

There are so many gems in eGoli where you can find the best SA fashion.

Because a lot of us are used to a mall culture, you may not always find it the most convenient way to shop - as most of these are standalone stores dotted around the metropolis – but it’s well worth taking the various trips.

A lot of us tend to work, eat and entertain ourselves in our chosen zones. For instance, you’ll hardly ever catch me further north than Sandton, south of the CBD, east of Norwood and west of Auckland Park.

But whether you're new to Jozi or just passing through, here are some shops I've visited or have received rave reviews from friends I trust:

Auckland park (44 Stanley)

Lunar (011 726 5558)

Best for ultra-feminine dresses if you have a special occasion like a wedding, day at the races or an elegant soiree.

Dr Pachanga (074 311 0262)

If you want to stand out in a crowd, you’ll find an eclectic mix of bold colours and prints including accessories and second-hand clothing. Very budget-friendly.

Pichulik (011 482 1389)

Recently spotted on Emma Watson, these statement pieces are made using locally manufactured ropes and trinkets.

Row G (011 853 0000)

Did you see the matching oxblood suits RhaRha Lombard and Petite Noir wore when they won the most stylish couple award last year?

Hyde Park

Kisua (011 879 1954)

Technically not a purely South African, the fashion pieces are a combination of ethically-sourced African materials and contemporary silhouettes.

Maboneng (The cosmopolitan)

Yswara (010 005 5111)

Stop by here for the most luxurious tea experience including loose leaf teas, accessories and candles from the continent. Perfect for gift-giving.

Maria McCloy (082 340 0262)

Any accessories addict will love her clutches, shoes and more for an effortless mix of vibrant African prints and urban culture.

Marshall Town

Drop in here for style masterclasses and modern vintage items that fit perfectly with the latest trends.

Melville

Convoy (083 548 5321)

One of my favourite stops, you’ll find local brands like Selfi, Black Betty Design and Heart & Heritage.

Superella (082 845 5551)

If comfort is usually the dealbreaker when you’re choosing something to update your wardrobe, you’ll find something beautifully-constructed here.

Newtown

Maxhosa (011 492 1532)

I’m still saving up for one of Laduma Ngxokolo’s Xhosa-inspired knits. I may have a buy a pair of his socks to tide me over.

Northcliff

Suzaan Heyns showroom189 (011 782 9895)

For something avant-garde but completely wearable, you can’t go wrong with her sculptured designs and bridal gowns.

Ants, Parkhust (072 053 1257)

This lifestyle concept space specialises in art, design, fashion and music. They’ve stocked brands like L’Mad and their offering changes every few months.

Rosebank

The Space (011 327 3640)

I’ll just list a few of the local designers they stock: Amanda Laird Cherry, Coppelia, Fundudzi, Sies.

Miss Baba Keys Art Mile (083 285 1258)

Probably everyone has included one of their bags, pouches or accessories in their birthday gift wishlists. Leather in the most vibrant colours never looked so good.
