T-shirts are versatile and comfortable, and can also be a blank canvas for artists and illustrators. The latest Project Tees Collab collection by MRP is a fun, funky and creative limited edition line of quirky tees that showcase illustrations by six talented artists.
To show his skills, Lorenzo Plaatjies created a unique aesthetic that well represents who he is, as I saw when taking a quick squiz of his social-media accounts. “It’s got a very romantic and worn-out feel to it.
I wanted it to look unfinished like an 1800s Italian painting,” says Plaatjies, who digitally creates his illustrations. He is inspired by his peers and their work, especially painters and photographers. “I get my creative juices flowing by surfing the internet and listening to music to set the mood. I’m very much inspired by content found on the internet and culture.”
For styling the tee and getting a Plaatjies-approved look, he advises loose cuffed jeans or some rolled up pants and sneakers.
One other tee in the collection that got the #Trending team’s attention was Kobie Nieuwoudt’s ruffle sleeve printed tee that has an assemblage of images that are quite cheeky – on it are dice, a black cat, unicorn, Protea, seahorse and lots more.
“My aim was to create images that can be interpreted differently by each individual. It can be mythic, mysterious, humorous, spontaneous or tongue-in-cheek,” says Nieuwoudt. She recommends wearing the tee tucked into boyfriend jeans or a neutral mesh skirt paired with sneakers or flats.
