Tomatoes, milk and potatoes can treat sunburn?!

It’s summer, which means our days are spent out in the sun: whether it’s going to the beach, perusing local markets or just sipping some chilled wine poolside.

Often we forget to reapply sunscreen, or forget it all together, which means a bad sunburn. And once the damage is done, we look for quick relief products to help us through. Can’t afford them or simply don’t have after sun at hand?

Here are 10 unusual ways to treat your sunburn at home:

1.    Tomato
Sounds gross, but this actually works. You can apply tomato juice on sensitive burnt skin, the paste is similar to a low SPF which means it won't even sting. What’s better is to eat tomatoes to protect against sunscreen.

2.    Milk
Dip or compress a towel into milk and hold it for five minutes on the sunburn. According to Yahoo Health, the protein in the milk cuts skin irritation and creates a protective layer around the damaged skin.

3.    Oatmeal bath
Bathing in oatmeal will control redness and take the sting out of sunburn. Mix oatmeal, milk and honey, add to your bath and soak in the bath for 5 to 10 minutes.

4.    Plain yogurt
Yogurt helps restore the skin’s natural barrier and draws the heat of the burn. According to Cosmopolitan,  you should apply yogurt onto your burn 3 times for five to 10 minutes before wiping it off and then applying aloe vera.

5.    Vinegar
According to Pop Sugar, applying vinegar to your skin eases the pain. Soak a cloth in apple-cider or normal vinegar as it also keeps your skin from making blisters and peeling.

6.    Bath in tea bags
Take 4 black tea bags and drench it in warm water, then soak your washcloth and cover your burnt areas. This should be applied immediately after coming out of the sun and just before bedtime.

7.    Baking soda or cornstarch
Make a paste with baking soda (if you don’t have baking soda, use cornstarch) and water. Apply directly to the sunburn.

8.    Potatoes
Pulverise potatoes until it turns into a thick liquid or mash them and pat them to the burned areas on your body. According to How Stuff Works, this is a wonderful pain relieving technique and should be applied several times a day for best results.

9.    Shaving cream
Most shaving creams have menthol in them, which cools the skin down quickly.

10.    Cucumber
Cucumbers aren’t only used to deduce puffy eyes, but they are also a good remedy for sunburn. These vegetables provide immediate pain relief for your irritated skin.
