Fight that frizz!

accreditation
Hi girls

Phew! I finally got around to touching up my highlights.  (Don’t go spreading this around, but the older I get, the more my natural hair colour gravitates towards a shade that could best be described as ‘cold murky dishwater’...) Even worse, because my hair’s so bloody fine, the moment it gets a sniff of bleach, the extra ‘downy’ bits immediately turn into terrifying flash-fried frizz.

As a result, I’ve become pretty sussed in regards to products that promise to ‘calm’, ‘de-frizz’, ‘soothe’, ‘smooth’, ‘rehydrate’ and the like. (For the past two years, I’ve been completely indebted to Schwarzkopf Gliss Hair Repair Oil Nutritive Express-repair conditioner Anti Split-ends. Just two quick spritzes are all it takes to transform your hair from un-brushable Brillo pad to silk! When they stop making it, I’ll probably stop colouring my hair...)

Anyway, as I’m always excited to try new hair treatments, I was pleased to get my mitts on two this week - ghd Obedience Cream, R190, and Vo5 Deep Nourishing Hot Oil, R30, for a pack of three 5ml tubes. (Just so you know the "Deep Nourishing variant" is an "exclusive blend of five vitamins" for colour-damaged, brittle hair that’s prone to split ends).

Now, as far as ghd’s offering goes, I rather liked that it was a cream as opposed to a serum. This way, even if I applied a bit more than I needed to, it didn’t turn my hair into an oil slick. (Fine-haired girls, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about!) Also, you really don’t need all that much. A fifty cent-sized amount smoothed over my damp ‘do was all that I needed – and it definitely made my hair a lot easier to comb.

Another Obedience Cream benefit? It contains a ‘heat-activated’ protection ingredient that penetrates the hair’s cortex to improve its moisture levels and flexibility. So it’s great to apply before you blow dry. The only downside, however, is having to wash your hands afterwards. This is seriously sticky stuff!

In regards to Vo5, this tiny tube really surprised me. How it works is that you’re to leave it on your hair for one minute (a lot less longer than many other masques I’ve tried) before shampooing and conditioning as usual. (This is great, because I was worried that having put oil in my hair would cause a grease-tastic mess).

I followed the instructions to a tee and enjoyed a nice, nostalgic bath. It really took me back to the ‘80s when dallying with ‘hot oil’ was a part of a ‘big date’ ritual that included blow drying my hair upside down, applying pink shimmering eye shadow up to my brows and dousing myself with Coty Exclamation. (Had to look hot for my ‘boyfriend’. He rode a souped up BMX... )

But getting back to the results... Like I said, this is good stuff. I couldn’t believe that when I was done, I could glide a brush through my hair with ease and didn’t require any additional de-frizzing products.

In other news...

Next month, The Body Shop will launch a gorgeous organic skin care range called Nutriganics. Certified by ECOCERT (and that’s a tough nut to crack), the line works in unison to help smooth the first signs of aging.

I got to sample the Nutriganics Foaming Facial Wash, R135, and found it to be very pleasant. On a completely superficial level, what I liked the most is just how good it smelled! (Think rose, ylang ylang, magnolia and jasmine. We get sent several organic cosmetic goodies here at Women24 and while they may well be wonderfully wholesome, you’d be surprised as to how many of them simply smell like ass...) It also features Community Trade babassu oil to smooth and revitalise as well as moisturising mallow flower.

Thus, if you like your gorgeousness green, I suggest you pop in store to take a look. I also think it’s great that the line is so reasonable priced, ranging from R120 to R150.

Love, love

Leigh
