I am sure many of us have experienced finding our favourite mascara, only to find that the next time we go back to buy it, frustratingly, it’s been discontinued and replaced with some “improved version”. And we simply can’t tell what’s improved, but desperately wish for our old dependable favourite to return to the shelf.
When this does happen, it becomes very useful to know that the way mascara applies is totally affected by the shape and structure of the twirled mascara wand applicator that comes as part of the package. You could take the same mascara formula and apply it with two different shaped wands and you’ll experience a totally different effect!
Do you want more volume from your mascara?
Then be sure that the wand’s twirled bristles are not spread too far apart. You need lots of bristle in the brush and you want the bristle to be packed tightly together.
Do you want less clogging of mascara?
Then avoid those applicators with plenty of tightly packed short bristles. You need less bristle and more space in between their twirled arrangement.
Do you want more lengthening from your mascara?
Then you’re looking for longer bristles that are the most sparsely spread. This allows each bristle to get right in between each eyelash and comb the mascara through to the tips.
Going for volume and length?
Well, now you need to apply make-up artist's tricks of the trade and this may require a collection of old applicators from previous mascara packages. So don’t throw away the lids of old mascaras. Wash them in warm water and a disinfectant, such as Dettol.
Start with lengthening the lashes by using one of your wand applicators that have longer, sparsely spread bristles and coat the eyelashes through to the tips.
Next switch your applicator to one with plenty short, tightly packed bristles and apply your second coat which will create the volume. Voila!
