Top 3 ethnic hair trends

accreditation
Other than being in front of your hairstylist's scissors, nothing is more daunting than picking a hairstyle to suit your lifestyle. Take a look at our top three hairstyle trends for 2011 for ethnic hair and helpful tips for making the look work for you.

1.  Bright hues

You don't have to go with Nicky Minaj's bright pink hairdo all in one sitting. Try a more subtle approach by dyeing your hair in a slightly lighter shade, like a deep red or golden brown or you could get braids weaved with another colour.

If you decide to dye, first timers should have the look done professionally – this will allow you to ensure that your hair is strong enough to cope with the chemicals. If you're going for a lighter shade like blonde, be warned – your hairstylist will probably have to bleach your hair before colouring.

Tip: Have a scalp treatment two weeks before dying your hair to minimize breakage and damage. NEVER try to colour hair that has had henna or metallic dyes used on it.

2. Asymmetrical cut

The asymmetrical cut is usually longer at the front to frame the face, and a cut in shorter layers towards the back. Medium-length locks (just touching your shoulders) work best for an asymmetrical cut – but if you've invested thousands to grow your relaxed hair, be sure you're ready to make the chop.

If you're not ready, weaves are a heaven-send when it comes to asymmetrical cuts. If human hair weaves are too pricey for your budget, consider getting blended hair extensions, which are made with a combination of human and synthetic hair – these should cost about R120 per pack.

Tip: Remember to pin your hair back at night and cover with a satin cloth. This way, your weave can last up to eight weeks and still look good.

3. Au natural

Going bald has become more popular, with more catwalk models like Kaone Kario rocking a clean shaven head and sophisticated actresses like Keabetswe Motsilanyane rocking the 'do with confidence.

Keep your face shape in mind before chopping off your locks, the look works best for oval face shapes. For those with a round, square or heart-shaped face shape, rather than going bald completely, get your hair cut with a layer on the crown.

Tip:
You'll have to have your hair cut every four weeks to maintain the look.
