I was a little girl when I first saw the 1989 classic movie, Steel Magnolias. This laugh-out-loud, tear-jerking comedy about a group of Southern women featured a stellar cast of industry greats and made a massive impression on me.
One of the characters, played by Dolly Parton, is an effervescent, warm-hearted salon owner called Truvy, who doles out gossip and hilariously poufy ‘80s hair in equal measure. One of my favourite lines from the film is delivered in her Southern drawl, where she tells Julia Roberts’s character: “Honey, there is no such thing as natural beauty.”
While I don’t always live by that adage (all too often my “look” is almost aggressively natural) I am a woman who enjoys a bit of primping and preening.
