There are many ways to wear leather this winter. And it doesn’t even have to be real leather. As long as it looks like leather, you are good to go. And yet, leather and faux leather are actually a bit tricky to make look good on anything but a supermodel or Hollywood A-lister’s body.
So let me guide you.
Trimmings are the easiest way to get this trend started. Look for jumpers and blouses with leather collars, cuffs or binding around the neckline. This provides a fail-safe way to embrace the trend without having to make sure it suits your figure. Kristen Stewart did this best in a Jason Wu blouse with leather collar and shoulders.
Then look at a basic leather biker jacket. It’s a classic and you can’t go wrong. Throw it on over anything this season. Sarah Jessica Parker had hers on over a pink Oscar de la Renta dress. Lucy Liu did it best over her Mary Katratzou cocktail dress. And Rooney Mara was flawless wearing hers with basic black harem pants.
If you don’t want to go full biker with your leather jacket, limit the leather detail to the sleeves. This is massive this winter. A parka, like Olivia Palermo is wearing, is available everywhere. And you can even extend this to a leather-sleeved trench or coat. It’s easy and reasonably affordable to do.
A leather skirt is still pretty easy to pull off in fashion terms. There are plenty of great ones on offer at all the major retailers right now. Nicole Richie really gets hers right in a chic and sophisticated way. If you are a bit bolder, try coloured leather. Both Diane Kruger and Rose Byrne did this beautifully and really make it look easy. Just remember choose a pencil or an A-line, depending on what suits your shape.
Then, if we move into the higher grades, leather leggings are a real winner; if you have great legs like Miranda Kerr and Jessica Alba. But even if you don’t, a longer length jacket or blouse that covers the hips and upper thighs can make this trend completely wearable for most of us. Just be careful that the cheaper varieties don’t expose more than they should.
And finally there are the leather dresses. These are very difficult to do, as they have a tendency to be too small (and give you mono-boob) or too big. Getting it just rights takes a lot of luck and some courage. But when you do, you can look as good as Lauren Conrad, Kerry Washington or Blake Lively.
