5 hair repair products for better hair days

accreditation

Lately, I've been having a lot of bad hair days. Porous hair that tend to frizz, damaged split-ends and dry, dry tresses in general.

Can you relate?

Whether you hair is heat-damaged, sensitive to product, lacks shine, is colour-damaged or you have a dry and irritated scalp, we've reviewed some fab new products that are simply too good not to try.

But first, let's consider some basics of hair care:

1. Make sure you are using a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type. Go for a milder shampoo and conditioner when you have fine hair - you don't want your hair to be weighed down by the product. Hair oils can also be too heavy for girls with fine hair. Rather try a leave-in serum or a good mask every few days.

2. Use a fine-toothed comb instead of a brush. Combs cause much less breakage and will get out your knots very efficiently.

3. Livestrong.com says its best to never towel dry your hair by means of rubbing. Rather put your hair up in a towel, turban-style. This means much less friction, thus less breakage.

4. Cut your hair regularly to trim split ends. Matrix.com stresses the importance of prevention. Snip those ends before it becomes a hot mess girls.

5. Never apply conditioner or hair oil to your roots as your roots are always the most healthy part of your scalp. Only apply to hair ends.

1. ORS HAIRepair Silkening Serum (Clicks for R79.99)

Ah, how I love this little gem of a product. With Argan and Coconut oil (which makes for a very delicious scent by the way), this serum has become my hair’s new bestie.

My hair is often left feeling a little dry, especially after blow-drying, so I’m always on the lookout for a product that will bring back the shine, moisture and silkiness - surely the top 3 things that women demand for their hair.

Admittedly, I didn’t think much about the brown-orange-y serum when I first took it home to test, but, the moment I applied it, I was reassured. This product delivers on what it promises: to protect and shine. For the last few days, my hair has been feeling super soft, shinier than normal and my fingers glide through my hair effortlessly. Just what I wanted.

Give this one a try – you won’t be sorry. – Tammy February

2. Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Shampoo (for sensitive, easily irritated scalps)

This formula for sensitive, allergy-prone scalps was first created by Philip Kingsley for his wife, who was being treated for cancer at the time, and therefore could use only the gentlest of product. As someone with very sensitive skin myself, I was excited to this shampoo and conditioner.

Like much of Philip Kingsley's packaging, the shampoo and conditioner are in plain white tubes with black text. Although this isn't particularly eye-catching, and wouldn't necessarily grab you while looking at a store shelf, it works well with the concept of a simpler, gentler product, emphasising quality above all else.

The shampoo and conditioner live up to their claims: they are indeed fragrance free, and the shampoo and conditioner are white and clear. I found that the shampoo did not foam quite enough for my liking, but when I did some research I realised that this in part caters for sensitive scalps.

Overall, I was satisfied with the shampoo and conditioner. My hair feels soft and has great volume. My only complaint was that the shampoo did not keep my hair feeling clean for longer than a day and a half. My hair felt a bit greasy a bit too soon for my liking. - Julie Campbell

3. Davines MINU Hair Mask, R345.

Since this product is ideal for coloured hair, me, myself and my colour-damaged blonde tresses jumped at the opportunity to test out this lush, citrus-scented product.

I absolutely love the clear, no-nonsense packaging and the thick, luxe consistency of the actual mask.

Not only does it deeply nourish coloured hair, it also improves the duration of cosmetic colour. My hair is super fine so it's easily weighed down, but this makes my hair feel light as a feather. I use it about twice a week and can already see a big improvement after just 2 weeks as my hair feels healthier.- Marisa Crous

4. Davines MINU Hair Serum, R290.

We all know how crap it is when you spend a fortune colouring your hair, only to have it fade after a couple of washes. You barely have time to enjoy the new colour before it starts going dull and makes you wonder why you even made the change in the first place.

Enter, Davine’s MINU Hair Serum. It’s a leave in serum that helps treat the inevitable damage that comes with colouring while also helping the colour last– and boy does it work.

It ticks all the right boxes when it comes to leave in hair products. There's no greasy residue, it leave your hair feeling nourished, moisturised, and best of all, the scent is subtle so it does not compete with the scent of your shampoo and leave your hair smelling like an overdone fruit salad. And while it does not prevent your colour from fading in the long run, it does help keep your colour in for a little longer. - Annzra Denita

5. Vichy Dercos Neogenic Redensifying Shampoo, R295.

This product works wonders on boosting limp hair that lacks volume, density and strength. Try this product if your hair is feeling lackluster from winter dryness and need more volume and thickness.
