In an industry where the Afro was once a rare sight on fashion campaigns, editorials and the runway, it’s refreshing to finally see it in an abundance. Diversity has always been topical in fashion. We did not see enough of a range of all kinds of beauty – hair included. Models like Wakeema Hollis have shared harrowing tales of backstage hair damage because of an emphasis on a narrow beauty ideal. Although certainly no new phenomenon, now, the Afro hair industry is flourishing like never before. It’s not about trying to make a rebellious statement, it’s just about the individual embracing their authentic hair type. The versatile Afro in all its various lengths, textures and shapes is simply women choosing to embrace who they are naturally. Put down the flat iron. Buoyant and beautiful Afros will continue to take centre stage. As the line for the Black Pearl Collection goes, Own It!

Modern hair that’s free, natural and edgy? That’s more than a trend.
