Will rainbow roots work for you?

With so many fun, colourful hair and root trends going around lately, we are simply spoilt for choice. But the pressing question is always: will this trend work on me? And what will the consequences be for the health of my hair?

It's always important to consider your hair type and level of pigmentation when attempting trends. Not only is there a risk of embarrassment, but you can potentially do irreparable damage to your tresses.

Youtube beauty star Lottie Tomlinson recently grabbed the world's attention with her rainbow roots experiment. Now it seems that everyone wants this look. Um, yes, it looks like a mermaid married a unicorn and had a hair baby.

Obviously Lottie's grey/silver locks are perfect for this experiment. But can you try it too?

We asked a local salon owner about the risks involved when trying this look:

Who can do this? Can this be done on all hair types?

I would only recommend doing this professionally as dealing with highly pigmented colour could end in disaster and stained floors, tiles and walls. This would only really work well on white blonde straight hair. Darker hair colours would not show up and if the hair is curly the effect will be lost in the movement of the hair.

How long will the look generally last?

This will depend on the quality of the pigments used and quality of the hair. Some hair just holds colour better than others. We have some trendy fashion colours washing out in 2 days and others that last for a month or longer.

Would it be very expensive?

It wouldn’t be too expensive, we measure our tint according to milliliters used. However, because the fashion colours are slightly more expensive this would be more expensive than say your root tint.
