7 Summer Style Essentials

accreditation
Finally the weather is heating up (such a pleasure after the freezing cold winter we’ve had to put up with), so your look needs to sizzle too.

There are so many fabulous trends to choose from this season, yet more choice often leads to more confusion as women feel overwhelmed and unsure which looks to choose.

This is a seven-point checklist to ensure you have a hot summer look:

1. Summer dress:

A beautiful summer dress is a must have in most women’s wardrobes.  Finding the right dress style can be a bit tricky so be prepared to try a variety of styles till you find the right one for your shape.

For some great tips on finding your perfect summer dress, take a look at my Women24 blog post, “Slimming little numbers”.

2. Glamour top:
Summertime lends itself to special events and parties.  A glamour top is a great item to have in your wardrobe as you can instantly dress up a pair of jeans, a skirt or trousers depending on the occasion.

Look out for a statement piece with that wow factor and that makes you feel fabulous.  Be prepared to pay a little bit more than you usually would for such a find.   The extra expense will be worth it if you get a lot of wear out of it.

3. 70s inspired platform wedges:
The 1970s platform shoe has made a huge comeback.  Besides being fun to wear, they are comfortable too.

Whether you opt for a classic or nude colour that will go with anything or a bold colourful pair that will make a statement, a pair of platforms is the ultimate summer purchase for your shoe collection this year.

4. Bold nails:
Nail colour trends have taken on a whole new level of brilliant bright colours, ranging from shimmery turquoise green, bright fuchsia and coral to various shades of red.  Metallic colours are also very hot this season ranging from bright gold to subtle muted shades.

If you are not crazy about bright colour on your fingernails then paint your toenails in a fun summer colour and show off your summer sandals.

5. Summer sandals:
As much as I am a huge fan of adding height with shoes, I am also aware that there is a need for flat comfy shoes for the casual days.  Bejewelled sandals, bright colourful strappy styles and metallic shades take the stage this summer.  This is an easy way to add a touch of glamour to your casual look.

Make sure your feet are well looked after if you are going to show them off.  You want the style of the shoe to be the focus, not your chipped toenail polish.

6. A pop of colour:
This summer, colour is brighter and bolder than I’ve seen in a long time.  Warm weather lends itself to wearing brighter shades.  Have fun with colour.  Select two or three accent colours that really suit your complexion and wear them with pride.

Colour can do wonders to focus on the parts of your body you like and draw attention away from the parts you don’t.  Take a look at this column for some great tips on how to wear colour.

7. Palazzo trousers:

70s inspired palazzos are not only hot fashion items, but also super easy to wear if you find the right shape.  Make sure you select a pair of palazzos trousers that fit well at the waist and hip and flair from the hip.  This creates an elongated look, making you look taller and slimmer.

To add some height, wear a pair of comfy platform shoes and make sure the hem of your trousers covers most of your shoes.  That way, no one will know you are wearing such high heels and will think you are actually that tall!

Enjoy enhancing your look this summer.  Try new things you never thought you would wear and have fun in the sun… with sunblock and a hat of course.
