Fashion dilemma: should you invest or shop the trend for cheap?

Should you splurge on that expensive pair of jeans or rather buy that budget pair from Mr Price?

No matter your style, there are wardrobe staples that make dressing almost an effortless process.

Here, I round up some of winter's best fashion pieces, recommending which items you should save for and spurge on; as well as those fashion pieces you don't have to break the bank for:

Fashion to invest in

A trench or caramel coat

For years, women around the world have been in love with the classic, beige trench - first popularised by Burberry.

It is a classic that has been re-imagined so many times, by countless clothing companies around the world.

Buy one that is really good quality, and I promise you, you will never look back in anger.

A tailored blazer

There's nothing like a well-cut boyfriend blazer to complete any outfit. A tailored one really makes a massive difference, believe me. Get one in black or charcoal if you can, they go with anything. We love the one Thithi Nteta chose here with her all black outfit:

Sunglasses

Your eyes are very, very important. Never, ever try to skimp on sun protection for your eyes - like buying sunnies on the side of the road. Invest in a great pair that you can wear season after season.

The perfect pair of jeans

The perfect pair of jeans can take you a long way. You can wear them often and pair it with a budget-friendly, trendy top. You can even do it like Amy Scheepers and do a double denim look:

Shop the trend for less

Statement jewellery

I would recommend that you shop trendier pieces, like say '90s style polo necks and fashionable on trend arm candy for cheaper. South African designers like Pichulik are managing to create beautiful, African-inspired pieces that are well made, great quality and available for under R300. That means, you can shop new items every season. Bargain!

Do it like Lulama Wolf and add some statement pieces to your classic wardrobe now!

The denim shirt

A denim shirt is always a great item to add to any plain look. Pair it with black skinnies, sneakers and a beanie for an easy-yet-edgy ensemble. Denim shirts are freely available, for cheap, at vintage and thrift stores, or head to Cotton On and Mr Price for pocket-friendly options.

Aztec knits

A lovely, cosy, oversized knit or poncho is a must every winter! Get them on a budget at Cotton On and shops like Woolworths or Edgars.

If you are really in love with a specific jersey or knit, I would say: invest. But for playful, on trend pieces like Aztec knits, go for the cheaper options.

The Breton shirt

This is one of those classic items that can be worn with anything. You are welcome to invest in one that will last you a lifetime, but as striped tops are such a wardrobe staple, you can find them almost anywhere in both short and long sleeves.

We love how Mare Claire SA's Kelly Fung styled hers with a black trench:
