Fashion fad: Celeb designers

Madonna, Beyonce and Victoria Beckham gaining designer status has prompted other singers and actresses like Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker to venture into the fashion business. For centuries, fashion was the sole terrain of lauded design houses like Versace.

Does this mean that design houses could lose their ground?

Celebs can design snappy collections for their fans but global fashion brands need more than a touch of glamour to actually sell, says Versace.

The difference

Marketing. Not everyone can afford a Versace gown or Dolce & Gabbana jeans, so celebs promote their collections at a reasonable price. And once you have a popular name and face attached to a brand, it’s bound to sell anyway.

Take Jessica Simpson for example, her “Dessert” label is on course to break R 7 billion by next year! And she launched her clothing, make-up, shoe and perfume line just three years ago.

Nevertheless Donetella Versace says she is not afraid of competition from celebrities. "Music stars wear Versace," she said. In fact Jennifer Lopez, who has done pretty well in the celeb-gone-fashion-designer department herself, made waves wearing one of Versace’s most memorable designs to the Grammy’s a few years ago.

Do you prefer celebrity-designed clothing or creations from established fashion houses’?
