H&M South Africa apologises for racist Twitter mistake

accreditation

Global fashion retailer H&M recently opened its doors in South Africa, much to the delight of many Capetonians.

Yet now already H&M South Africa is finding itself in some hot water.

Served up on Twitter, it all started when South African blogger, Tlalane Letlhaku (@Tlaly_Branch) tweeted H&M asking the following:

A very valid tweet.

H&M's mind-boggling response read:

What the actual?

Naturally people on Twitter were enraged:

As we've seen with the controversy surrounding Edgars earlier this year, its always best to apologise instead of employing a gang of spin doctors to convince the public of your empty argument.

This week Sandton also got a taste of what's to come, with a VIP media launch party held earlier this week. H&M has especially been in the news lately for their collaboration with French design house, Balmain.

And yesterday I stopped by the Cape Town store to check out the Balmain for H&M offering. I was welcomed by a queue that stretched around a block. Fashion fans were eagerly awaiting the Balmain drop - some people apparently even slept there. No jokes.

At 9am sharp the doors opened and we all ran (I did a brisk walk) for it. People were grabbing, fighting over items, and everything was GONE in 2 minutes flat. Chaos. It was basically something like this...

But even if their argument is that they have "global marketing campaigns" then there's still something seriously wrong with the way they see the world.
