There are usually two reasons why people talk about Victoria’s Secret:
1. To discuss their ridiculously Photoshopped models or
2. To discuss how hot said models are, even especially without Photoshop.
So, when they were recently lambasted for their supposed “racist” new range, I was pretty shocked. How on earth do you create racist underwear?
Well, for starters, you call it “The Sexy Little Geisha” outfit… then you pop onse Candice Swanepoe into a mesh get-up with floral print fabric on the bra and crotch, and add a removable obi belt. Oh and don’t forget a matching fan and chopsticks.
Because we all know that’s how Asians do it, right?
Personally I think calling it racist is just silly. But these days people take offense to just about anything.
Like one woman, who accused VS of “essentialising Asian identity and reducing "Eastern" culture to a stereotype of exotic sexuality."
According to her “it’s a troubling attempt to sidestep authentic representation and humanization of a culture and opt instead for racialized fetishizing against Asian women."
VS have since taken down the advert, and now redirect users who want to view the “Go East” collection to their homepage.
I wonder if it will sell? If I looked half as good as Candice Swanepoel does wearing it I wouldn’t mind one of those little Geisha get ups. Am I a racist?
You tell me!
Do you think the outfit is racist?
