Summer cover-ups

Women struggle with dressing for comfort whilst keeping the "less loved bits" covered. Here are some great tips to keep fabulously cool without feeling too exposed...

If you want to cover your upper arms

Sleeve lengths:
¾ or short sleeves ending just above the elbow are fantastic for covering up your upper arms, but make sure the sleeves don’t fit too tightly. If you have big boobs, be careful of very full sleeves as they will make your upper arms look like an extension of your boobs.

Bell sleeves in sheer fabrics:
Full length or ¾ length bell sleeves work wonders to de-emphasise wide upper arms and the sheer fabric allows you to remain cool during the day.

Cami cover-ups:
Most women have a variety of colour cami’s but will never wear them out in public. Invest in a shrug top or light weight gele’ to wear over your cami. This will cover your upper arms, keep you cool and help you make use of that unused cami collection.

If you want to cover up your love handles

Get the proportions right:
Avoid wearing trousers that are too low cut and push the love handles up, and out over the waistband. Rather select trousers with a wide waistband that sits just below your belly button.

Keep the style plain without pockets, pleats and details and pair them with tops that just barely cover the widest part of your tummy. If you wear your tops too long, you will make your tummy look bigger. If you get the trousers right, you will find it easier to find tops that flatter your shape.

How to wear thin clingy fabrics:
Summer collections are usually filled with tops made of thin clingy fabrics. Wear a fitted cotton cami underneath your clingy top as this helps to smooth everything out. Opt for clingy fabrics in a print – you will be amazed at how a print top in the right shape and size can do wonders to disguise what’s fabric and what’s flesh. Give it a try and you will see what I mean.

If you want a "cover up" to wear over your cozzie

A sarong:
A beautiful sarong can be used as an elegant cover-up to wear over your swim suit. If you have big hips, avoid tying your sarong at the hip, rather tie it in the front. If you want to hide your tummy, tie it to the side, rouging it around your tummy.

Kaftans:
I’m not a huge fan of these as I often find they make a woman look like a bag. But to cover your cozzie and protect you from the sun, select one in a sheer fabric that will still allow you to show off your shape. If it is in a print this could work well to show your basic shape, but disguise the fleshy bits.

The golden rule to selecting a successful cover up is to dress your entire body instead of dressing just to cover up the parts you dislike. Decide this summer to dress for your shape, focus your attention on the parts you love and accept the parts you don't. Time is too precious to waste on focusing on the less than perfect!
