What the hell is up with women’s clothing?

This morning the team and I were listing the items of clothing we were wearing.
“Two pairs of socks, a pair of tights, a pair of cycling shorts, jeans, a tank top, a long-sleeved sweater, a short-sleeved sweater, a jersey AND a coat,” said Carmen through chattering teeth.

“My thickest pair of socks, boots, jeans, a thick jersey, a bodywarmer and a beanie, and please can we talk about how I STILL can’t feel my feet?” mumbled Tammy through lips that were turning a weird shade of blue.

“I’m wearing a pair of tights, 2 pairs of socks, leggings, a winter skirt, boots, a thermal vest, a long sleeved top, a sweater and a coat,” I said, trying unsuccessfully to warm my hands under my armpits – unsuccessfully because my arms kept popping open like a stern Tinky-Winky trying to cross its short little arms.

All around us, the men in the office looked suspiciously normal. One of the guys at Sport24 was wearing a beanie, but then he wears them in summer too. And here and there someone was rocking a jauntily tied scarf or a sexy Batman style coat, but generally all of them looked their normal casual, stylish selves.

There wasn’t a hint of padded Teletubbie, no one sat with blankets or hot water bottles, and no one was visibly shivering. And it was not because women feel the cold more than men. In fact, since women generally have a higher fat percentage we are actually more resistant to cold.

It was simply another example of the dastardly goings on in the world of women’s clothing, this one being: women’s clothing is never really warm.

If it wasn’t for a few pairs of my ex-husbands socks and a sweater or two that he’d donated to me, I’d never survive these cold winter nights. Men’s clothing is just warmer. This also counts for gloves, shoes and even jeans. Yes ladies, you heard me, even men’s jeans are thicker and warmer than women’s jeans.

Don’t ask me why. I don’t think it’s some weird conspiracy theory, but sometimes I wish it was. Why do you think our clothing is inferior to men’s when it comes to thread count, warming ability, density and durability? I’d love to know.

In the mean time, I’ll be warming my hands under the hot water tap in the ladies’.
