1. Get a bed fit for a queen
A good quality mattress will help you feel invigorated in the morning, couple with luxurious linen, and you will sleep like royalty. The most luxurious sheet options are either 100% cotton percale with a thread count of 200 or more, or 100% linen. Cotton and linen feel and look very different, so it is a personal choice.
Cotton feels cool against the skin, soft and silky, whereas linen is more textured with a lower thread count. It becomes better with age, and is chosen for its durability. Egyptian cotton is the most luxurious of cottons and has the finest fibre, giving it the softest feel. Round your sleeping experience off with a snug throw, pretty scatter cushions, a glamorous big headboard and matching bedside tables.
2. Go for smoky wall colours
By changing the colour of your walls, or even just one focal wall, the character of a room changes instantly. Be brave and go for dark, smoky colours such as charcoal, grey or navy for a sensual atmosphere. Add metallic touches for a more glamorous feel.
3. Buy a lavish carpet
The bedroom is where you want to kick your shoes off, so splash on a beautiful carpet that is pleasing on the eye and soft underfoot. This is the one room where wall-to-wall carpets are still desirable. For double the luxury, roll a loose rug out over the carpet. The rule of thumb – the more expensive, the more durable a carpet is and the easier to keep clean. Wool carpets are known for their high quality and soft touch. Cotton carpets are an affordable way to add character, but are dirt magnets, so they’re not for high traffic areas.
4. Try soft lighting
Bright work light belongs in the kitchen and study. In the bedroom the contrary applies - the moodier the better. Install a dimmer switch, or choose weaker warm white bulbs and lampshades that diffuse light. For a whimsical feel, try a lampshade with cut-outs or faceted glass or crystals to create soft patterns against the walls and ceiling. Choose matching reading lights, or suspend pendant lights above the bedside tables.
5. Create a sitting area
Two occasional chairs, or a chaise-lounge next to a small coffee or side table creates an inviting nook to relax with a night cap and serve as a reminder that the bedroom is a place of rest and relaxation – your retreat after a long day’s work.
