7 hacks to optimize your household appliances

It was designed for one purpose – to open cans. But did you ever stop and think that there is so much more it can do?

This goes for many different appliances lying around in your home. There are simple household hacks that optimize the use of these seemingly single-use objects.  

Check out these 7 new ways to use household appliances:

1. Use a colander to hand wash clothes

It's frustrating when that one top you really wanted to wear is dirty, but you don't have a full load of washing to stick into the machine. So why not use a large colander to hand-wash it?

According to Good House Keeping, a colander is the perfect way to remove water from washing with out having to wring the life out of your garments.This is especially handy for all those delicate items of clothing you don't want to ruin.   

2. Ice cube trays can be turned into a jewelry organizer

Trying to find your stud earrings, or small pendants in a jewellery box is a nightmare. Popsugar has the answer. Using an ice-cube tray as an organizer will make things so much easier for you. You can now easily separate your rings, earrings and chains.

3. Turn your dish towels into placemats

Have a favourite dishcloth that you just hate using to wipe up the counters with? Real simple suggest a more decorative use for it. Lay it on the table next time you have a meal and use it as a placemat.

4. Open sealed plastic packages with a can opener

When it comes to  opening hard plastic packaging, it feels like the universe is conspiring against you - until now. Thanks to this handy trick we found on Pinterest, you  no longer have to struggle with the opening of a sealed package. Simply use  a can opener to cut the sides. If it works on tin, it will easily slide through plastic.

5. Use an old pill case to store spices for traveling
When going to a self-catering place on holiday, you often have to sacrifice your favourite spices and make do with bland food during your trip.Use a pill case to carry a pinch of all your favourite spices with you the next time you travel. 6. Quiet a squeaky door with cooking spray

Good House Keeping recommends you silence that squeaky door with just a few sprays of cooking spray in the hinges of the door.

7. Make big ice cubes using a muffin tray
Plunging your hand in a tub filled with ice water to grab a drink a party is the worst. This happens because small ice cubes melt faster. Spare your guests frostbite by using bigger ice cubes. Real Simple suggests using a muffin tray to make your big ice cubes. Just make sure you wash the muffin tray before you fill it with water.
