Design of the week:
The V&A Waterfront’s Silo District is a dynamic place to be right now. As the country prepares for the opening of the multibillion-rand Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, located on the premises – having been sold as the continent’s most important art event of the past 100 years – a second hotel has been announced for the top floor of the sixth silo. It is called the Radisson Red, and it’s fabulous.
The hotel promises to fuse technology with art, music and design. It is doing away with receptionists and bell hops, and will introduce keyless entry, a digitally managed room service and self-check-ins. Also fun are the introduction of four event and game studios, which will surely appeal to the Radisson’s new “ageless millennial” target market.
The Oui Bar Kitchen, located on the top floor, will also be something special, as the menu will be inspired by Cape Town’s street-food culture and all ingredients will be sourced locally.
Farm-grown Gatsbys for room service? Um, yes please. After that – or before, depending on your guilt threshold – you can fight the carbicide with morning yoga overlooking the city, or go for a dip in the pool with a freshly squeezed drink in hand from the juice bar.
The hotel is set to open in the third quarter of this year, around the same time as the opening of the museum on September 27. In the meantime, check out the Silo district – there are a bunch of cool spaces that have opened their doors already.
