Dark interiors and finishes may seem daunting but when done right, they create a modern, polished interior that makes your living room look like a masterpiece.

Colours can completely transform the ambience of your living room. White accents and pieces are often used to make your home look larger so it can seem a bit tricky to get away with furniture or walls in an inky palette and still maintain a space that feels airy, roomy and light.

There is no particular rulebook, but here are some tips to help you get it right.

Keep walls a few shades lighter

Stark black is best kept as an accent colour. If you overpower your living room with it, it could feel overwhelming. Opt for a shade of grey.

Or go the colour-block route.

Find items with contrasting details

Glass and chrome are good options that will help to incorporate dark pieces in the living room. Shop this Ella glass top coffee table at Decofurn, R999.

Or break it up with a large mirror as a wall decoration, which will also enhance any light coming from windows and lamps.

Accessorise with pops of colour

To avoid a dark palette from making the room look bleak, choose something over the top like a charming chandelier or a contrasting decorative piece. They will work well to give off a sharp and sophisticated look and bring some warmth to the decor.

Have fun with layering

Experiment with different shades and textures of black and grey that will also harmonise the effect of all the dark furniture.
