The annual 100% Design SA exhibition, part of Decorex, is one of our highlights on the annual design calendar. This year, they’ve partnered some of South Africa’s best designers with SA Mint to commemorate the 50th year of the Krugerrand, producing five objects that pay tribute to this famous gold coin.
All your faves are there – Pichulik has created another beautiful jewellery piece, woven of black and gold thread; Okapi also used black and gold – to create a classic evening bag (accessorised with its signature gold-capped horn); Ceramic Matters presents a black and gold glazed aloe; and Blandat studio produced a super-impressive, Hermes-style silk scarf that weaves together the story of the Krugerrand with the history and culture of South Africa.
But we’re in total love with the legacy cape made from traditional Basotho blankets by fashion designer Thabo Makhetha. The cape features a circular collar – inspired by the shape of the coin itself – with gold beading, and embroidery inspired by the Krugerrand’s beading, aloe and springbok.
