Being a tenant in someone else’s home can often limit your ability to take on a couple of DIY projects in your space. Even though rentals can be a bit challenging at times, with their unattractive floors, outdated light fixtures and off-white walls, there are tons of ways to customise the space to your own style.
One thing that has annoyed a lot of renters is the landlord’s strict policy against drilling or knocking nails into the walls. So for those of us who want to display our collection of art on the walls, or create shelving for all those extra kitchen spices and herbs, there is still a way to do so.
Ever heard of double sided tape?
It works miracles when it comes to light weight mirrors and flat wooden shelving and will offer a temporary solution to your storage needs. Don’t get put off by the limitations, rather work with it than against it.
You don't have to hang your art
Lean large pieces of art against the wall or place them on windowsills or bookshelves. Their visibility does not depend on a permanent fixture to the wall.
Try removable wallpaper
If you’re feeling uninspired by the four walls surrounding you, dabble in the idea of removable wallpaper. Wallpaper is one of the easiest ways to make your rental stand out. You wouldn’t even need to use a lot, it’s the budget-friendly rental hero when it comes to decor. It will give the space a splash of colour, frame the room or add personality without damaging the surfaces.
The lighting can set the tone
If you can no longer look at that antiquated light fitting staring at you from your bedroom’s ceiling, then make the switch to something more contemporary. Set the design tone by replacing the original lights with something that better fits your style. A new trend has taken over, where beautifully designed hand crafted antique style bulbs are being used instead of light fixtures; they come in an assortment of cluster pendants and string lights, and give rooms a soft romantic light instead of an overexposed white shine.
It's still your home
These tips are just a precursor in establishing a rental into an extension of your personality. However, at the end of the day, remember the most vital component: home sweet home. Even though it’s not a place you own, you are living there, so take on the perspective that this is your home - a place for you to unwind, relax and enjoy.
