4 cool camping spots for an adventure holiday

accreditation
While the Northern hemisphere gets ready for the cold, we are lucky enough to have a sunny summer holiday season.

So why not make use of the beautiful weather and plan a fun, outdoor holiday?

Nothing brings people closer than sharing a night under the stars, going on a hike or just chilling by the fire swapping stories.

Camping also means using the coolest stuff – only in the outdoors is it socially acceptable to wear a hatchet, knives and portable GPS on your belt.

Whether you are planning a family getaway or just some time off with your friends, there are plenty of camping gems around the country to visit and awesome gadgets to help make the trip easier.

Here are 4 of our favourite camping spots:

1.    Magalies Sleepy River Campsite, Magaliesberg

This is the perfect hybrid camping spot. It gives you a break from the hustle and bustle of Joburg, but is not too far from it. You can enjoy hiking trails, horse riding and even a trip down a gold mine.

The river is a great for mini explorations, and you can break out your GoPro to snap pics and take video of this wild and wet landscape and river that is so close to the urban jungle. To ensure you keep the outdoors clean (have you seen the amount of plastic polluting the streets of Joburg?) EcoSoulife has cups, bowls and utensils that you can bury in the ground so it can bio-degrade in 2-3 years.

2.    Coffee Bay Camping, Coffee Bay

Camping by the sea is absolutely magical, and Coffee Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches SA has to offer. Coffee Bay Camping lets you set up camp right near the beach, where you can fish, surf or just laze about with a good book.

There is also plenty of fauna to go explore – if a casual stroll is too tame for you, there are also rugged trails for you to get your hike on.

If you are worried about your stuff getting wet by being so close to the sea, Outdoor Research Rangefinder has a variety of bags designed to keep water out. Their seams are welded shut with heat pressure, instead of stitched ensuring maximum waterproofing.

3.    Mahai Campsite, Royal Natal National Park, KZN

This one is for the mountain lovers. Mahai camp site is situated at the foot of the Darakensberg. This means that there are great hiking trials for you to explore, from beginner trails to more advanced ones. You can also choose to camp at sites with electricity or without, depending on how hardcore you want to be.

If you are cool enough for the more advance hikes, you should be rocking Kühl clothing. It’s light weight, so you won’t feel weighed down and it’s designed to keep you cool and dry while you conquer the trails.

4.    Tietiesbaai Beach Camp, West Coast

You know you are going off grid when the only way you can book a camp site is by post or fax! Tietiesbaai is for the real campers who like to rough it old school style. Well, not totally old school, since there are still bathroom facilities. However, there is no power. To navigate your way in the dark, Secur has a good range of flash lights, lanterns and power banks. This means you have a light source, and a charging source to keep your devices charged so you don’t miss out on capturing those precious holiday moments.

When your light source runs out, you can always pop to your car and use UST Volt USB adapter to power up again.

According to Travel Start, this campsite is hugely popular due to its stunning views and tough terrain. There are 60 caravan- and campsites available. This is definitely the place to go for a proper outdoor adventure.
