1) Pack lightly
I know, I know, you've heard it all before!
When packing for a long trip it's so easy to get carried away with those just-in-case extras and the you-never-know additions, but it's not worth it!
So step away from your bag, take a deep breath and stop yourself! Those extra kilo's are not worth the effort! As a woman, I know the temptation is big- I am embarrassed to admit some of my most heinous packing crimes that have cost me precious holiday minutes.
I plead guilty to all of them; admitting to taking both a day and night toiletry bag on most (okay, maybe all) of my holidays, to having a backpack specifically for my shoes, I know it's not easy to put that extra pair of jeans back in the cupboard but in this case - ladies, you need to say 'NO' to the dress.
2) Plan ahead
As tempting as it is to get caught up in those inspirational quotes on Pinterest that tell us to throw caution to the wind and set off aimlessly into the unknown, it's not always smooth-sailing and sunsets waiting for you at the end of the rainbow.
One particular story comes to mind where a friend and I made last minute travel plans, arriving late in Italy, one chilly Friday night.
We had spent the majority of the train trip congratulating ourselves for our spontaneity, arriving in Florence with no idea of where we were staying or how we would get there.
Needless to say, two hours in the freezing cold town led to our sense of humour flying out the window and a promise to stick to the right side of caution for the rest of our trip.
3) Don't be too rigid
I know I just told you to make a plan, but as important as it is to prepare, don't be scared to make last minute changes or go with the flow if needs be!
4) Eat well, but not too much
Although holidays are a time to relax your rigid no gluten, no carb, sugar-free diets that you have religiously stuck to throughout the last couple of months, try and keep a clear head about your weight before rushing in for that second slab of top deck.
Before you know it you'll be waiting at arrivals for your brother/mother/lover to pick you up and they'll walk right past you.
Believe me, it's happened.
5) Budget
The most boring but sadly the most important of these 5 tips. Don't blow the bank on a holiday you can't afford or it'll be the last one you get to go on!
