5 Decorating Dos

A slick of paint or a striking piece of art can work wonders in your home. So, if you’re thinking of making any changes, here’s what you need to consider:

Discover YOUR personal style:  Your home has to represent you and you have to feel comfortable in it. Unfortunately, the process of decorating can become overwhelming – more so if you’re not exactly sure of what it is that you want to achieve.

Spend some time discovering your likes and dislikes before jumping into a particular theme. Look at magazines, collect photographs of items that grab your attention, browse the net and visit more than one furniture store. Soon you’ll start noticing a pattern – use it as a guide to your own, unique decorating style.

Pick a signature piece:  Like we told you before, this is the most dominant item in a room and it adds to the all-round feeling of that particular space. Signature pieces a.k.a focal points, should project and emphasise the style that you are trying to create. It can be anything from your bed frame, a chest of draws or a painting.

Put it at the top of your shopping list, as the rest of your goodies should idealy tie in around it.

Use a variety of textures and patterns: Mixing and matching different looks and feels can work in your favour - if done correctly.

The contrast of smooth and rough materials and the combination of shiny and matte accessories will stop your space from looking rigid and boring. Using a variety of textures will enhance visual interest and bring life to an otherwise dull home.

Consider the function of the room:
When decorating a room, have an idea of what the room will be used for.

•    Is there enough space for the activities that need to be done in that room?

•    Will your decorating style fit the room?

If it is a play room, the theme and colour scheme should be bright, warm and playful, for example. If it’s your bedroom or a guest room, you might opt for something more serene and calming. Bottom line… Your home needs to be comfortable AND practical – not only good to look at.

Let the light in: This goes for interior lighting and natural light.

If you have wide windows, draw back the drapes and let the sunlight shine through. The natural light will reflect nicely off white walls and neutral earthy tones.  Interior lighting in your home is vital when decorating as it adds to the ambiance and should complement the theme of the room. You can choose from many different lighting fixtures like side lamps, hanging lamps, overhead fixtures and even chandeliers.
