Decor for Dummies

accreditation
Are you mulling over a much needed home improvement, but shudder at the cost? It’s no big secret. Remodeling a house can cost you a fortune and unless your loan has been approved by a bank, will take years’ work of disciplined saving.

Screw (quite literally!) that. Here are a few decorating tips that in the long run, will save you thousands.

1. Be colour wise
Neon pink makes a great statement, but not in your bedroom. Instead of using fluorescent colours that age very quickly, choose something light and earthy that you’d be able to live with (and sleep in) for a while after you’ve painted it.

2. Use mirrors
Instead of breaking down the structure to make your lounge a bit larger, place a mirror on the wall. It’s a fact that if positioned correctly, mirrors can make a small room seem bigger. The added bonus? Mirrors also double up as an affordable decorative piece. It’s a win-win.

3. Keep it simple
Because less, after all, is so much more. Has your lounge suite seen better, brighter days? Don’t go out and buy a new couch – just get the old ones reupholstered. It’s cheap, easy and best of all; YOU get to choose the colour and design that you want.

4. Play with lighting
Enhance the ambience and mood of a room by adding – or removing – lights. Down lights are a good investment if you have a bar or entertainment area as they create a comfortable setting. Fireplace?  Drape fairy lights around the fixture. You’d be amazed what an affect a reading lamp, a crystal chandelier or even a colourful light bulb can make.

5. Draw the eye
Tiny room? Spruce it up by creating a focal point that grabs your visitors’ attention. A pretty picture in the middle of the wall, a mirror, an eye-catching lamp shade – the point is to give you something to look at as soon as you enter the room, instead of noticing the actual lack of breathing space.
