How’s this to kick off the festive season in full sober swing:
Instead of banning alcohol consumption altogether (an idea by SA Minister of Transport S’bu Ndebele, which has garnered a mixed response by our readers), authorities in The Netherlands have implemented a law where sloshed drivers will be forced to fit their cars with an 'alcolock'... a mini breathalyser device, designed to thwart the engine if you’re over the limit.
And that’s not all...
If needing to incessantly blow into the booze detector isn’t punishment enough for perpetrators, then how about the fact that the alcolocks – installed on the dashboard – will also be in your car for a minimum of twenty four months, with a scary six-year extension if the driver persists with his/her drunkard misdeeds.
I think it’s clever.
But would a device like this work in SA?
