Bathroom make-over tips

Your make-over is about to begin, but don't lift a finger until you've read these practical tips from Tile Africa to ensure a perfect end result:

Make sure it fits
This is a golden rule – measure and remeasure, and make sure your contractor does the same. Nothing could be worse than finding that your ideal bath is 10 centimetres too long for the space you've allocated. Don't forget to include space for opening doors and moving around in the bathroom. Remember also that tiled walls take up more space than untiled walls.

Choose the right tiles for your application
While floor tiles can be used successfully on walls, the opposite doesn't necessarily apply. Wall tiles are thinner and less dense than floor tiles and may not be able to withstand foot traffic. Choose a tile with a suitable PEI rating for the amount of traffic you can expect (1 for very low traffic areas and 5 for industrial applications). Don't forget to select a tiling trim to finish off the corner of walls and window sills.

Install tiles and fittings correctly
Whether you choose glazed ceramic, polished porcelain or natural stone tiles, make sure your contractor knows what he's doing when it comes to installing them. One size fits all does not apply to grouting and adhesives for tiles. When installing porcelain tiles, the rapid-set TAL Goldstar 6 adhesive is most suitable and has the added benefit of being ready for grouting in 6 hours, rather than the usual 24.

Natural stone and mosaic tiles require specific adhesives and TAL's Mosaicfix respectively. Grouting also comes in different formats and colours for different applications.

For showers, you either need a custom-made shower tray or you could tile the shower base with mosaic tiles to ensure a good grip for wet feet. You'll also need to make sure the wall is waterproofed up to shower rose height before tiling takes place.

Choose accessories to match your style
For small spaces particularly, keep accessories simple, but make sure they fit with your overall look. Towel rails or hooks are essential, but for a bit of luxury, why not consider a heated towel rail. Make sure you have this correctly installed by an electrician though.

Whether your make-over is large or small, don't be afraid to get help.
