How to buy and appreciate art

First-time buyer?
Many South Africans are interested in investing in art, but are often overwhelmed by the variety of choices and their lack of knowledge in this regard.

•    What kind of art should one purchase?
•    What should one look for in an artwork?
•    Is it a sound investment and a way to make money?

Says Robert Rosenberg, Marketing Director of Fine Art Portfolio: “In terms of what to look for, you should be guided by something that appeals to you.

•    Does the artist portray something which you can see in your mind’s eye but cannot express – maybe an emotion or fond memory?
•    Does it have pleasing lines, colour and form?

Try to understand why the image appeals to you.

•    Does it have something unique in your view which gives you pleasure?

Rosenberg says that it is the incorrect motive, if in isolation, to buy art simply in the hope of becoming rich – one should instead buy for the love of art.

“The artists’, whose work you bought, may flourish and develop or stop painting all together. Both can be good or bad for its future value. Rarity in beauty can always demand a premium but not immediately. What has been proven in South Africa since the early 1960’s is that artworks have, in Rand terms, doubled in value every four to five years. But this should still not be your only motivation.”

When asked “Who is the best artist?” he adds that “This is the wrong question. It’s more about what you like. Remember that art is completely personal.”

Rosenberg concludes by saying that it all boils down to personal taste and something that appeal to the individual.
“With over 5000 original artworks on offer, Fine Art Portfolio boasts one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of art by established South African artists, covering a wide variety of genres including Abstract, Landscape and Seascape, Wildlife, African and Township and Still Life. Other categories include bronze sculptures, hand-coloured engravings and ceramics. - all of which have something to say and say it well.”
