It happened two weeks ago, when we received an email confirming that there would be load shedding at 12pm and due to this, the canteen would only be selling certain food at work. It was 11:45am.
So, my colleague and I said we were going to rush down to the canteen to get lunch before load shedding but we ended up chatting to someone else.
As we went down, we got into the lift. As the door closed, there was complete darkness! I was stunned for a minute and thought it was an earthquake or something, and then we both shouted "LOADSHEDDING!"
We both screamed and I almost cried because I knew we would be stuck in the lift for two hours!! We both had no cell phones (genius) and we were stuck between the 2nd and first floor.
We had to bang and shout on the lift doors for 20 minutes and no one heard us! Eventually someone heard and called a maintenance man.
The poor guy had to manually pry the doors open and take us out of the lift - legs first - because we were stuck between two floors. We have vowed never to take the lift again even with no load shedding and we are still the laughing stocks at work.
Even though I wanted to laugh, cry and scream at the same time when we got out, I was just glad we were free! Why we decided to use the lift knowing there was going to be load shedding, I'll never know.
