Organise your life: Getting started

Hands up if you think getting organised is boring. Yep, that’s most of you. Now keep that hand waving if you are looking for clarity, room to breathe, less stress, save money and better control of your time – thought so!

Let’s take a moment to focus on the short-term pain (I promise to make it as simple as possible), so you can enjoy the benefits that getting and staying organised can bring.

First things first, organising isn’t rocket science but rather about finding the simplest solutions for the things that aren’t working.

Small changes implemented in your space or with your time will go a long way to helping beat the sense of overwhelm that tends to envelope even the bravest of us when it comes to tackling our stuff.

Like most things in life though, it’s all about getting started and that’s exactly what we are tackling in week 1.

Here’s the plan…
Challenge: Walk around your home or office and make a list of everything that is not working or looking the way you know it should. This could include unopened mail, never enough time for laundry, unfinished to-do list, messy wardrobe, clutter in the kitchen, no space to work, too much to juggle, etc. Now look over this list and think of what area is causing you the most stress, frustration, pain, barrier to success right now. This is your starting point.

It’s taken time to build up clutter in your space, and sadly there’s no magic wand to make it all go away.

Top tips to keep you on track:
•    Once you know where to start, focus on this one area only.
•    Put time aside to get organised and minimise distractions by taking the phone off the hook, arranging a play date for the kids or telling your colleagues what you are up to - if this is a big fat and not so juicy mess, you might need to allocate pockets of time to tackle the space over a couple of days or weeks, instead of diving into tackle it in one go.
•    Decide how you want the space to look once you have completed - this will help you determine where you are in the organising process and how much more still needs to be done.
•    Label some boxes - give away, sell, not for this room and arm yourself with refuse bags for recycling or trash.

Okay, so we’re not really done but at least you’ve started and that’s part of the battle won.

Tell us what organising projects/tasks are on your to-do list, and if we can, we’ll try and include some expert tips and solutions in one of our future articles.

*Next week we’ll be chatting about diving in to declutter and organise your clothes cupboard … despite the perfectionist belief, it’s not about 90 degree colour coded piles but more about what feels good and right for you.
