Nobody ever wants to hear that they’ve overpaid for anything, least of all a flight. But, with so many routes and airlines available, it can be a nightmare to sift through each and every one of them.
So, because I know it’s an awesome feeling when you find the best possible deal, I have devised a guide to help you.
Investigate
And take into consideration the following:
• Peak season for any destination means you will almost always pay more.
• Travelling via another country/city is sometimes cheaper than a direct flight.
• Package deals (which includes flights, accommodation, airport taxes, meals and etc.) are often more cost-effective.
• Websites like Groupon, Wikideals, etc. have random, but really awesome discounts.
• If you’re a Discovery Vitality member, you qualify for savings on Emirates, Kulula and British Airways (I saved 25% on my airticket to Dubai because of my silver status!).
• Farecast, a reasonably accurate price foreseeing site, predicts whether present airfares are a bargain, and whether or not the cost of flying to a specific destination is rising, falling, or staying the same.
• Follow airline Twitter and Facebook accounts – they occasionally post social media only specials.

Gosh, I discovered that there are so many of these websites. Try Hippo.co.za and Travelstart.co.za and PriceCheck.co.za and SAFlights.co.za.

Book ahead
According to a frequent flyer friend, flight prices are generally at their lowest about two months before the departure date.
I’ve also heard that buying midweek, on a Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday is cheaper and that making your transaction in the afternoon – around 2-3pm – is best.

Be careful of hidden costs and exclusions
Like insurance, for example, which you may already have.
Also, sometimes a fare seems as though it’s a good deal, but then it doesn’t include, say, airport taxes. Make sure you read the fine print.
Okay... so I’m not professing to be an expert. But, the points above should definitely aid you.
