MY STORY: ‘We are both miserable because we know we love each other’

In March this year I met a guy via Facebook – even though I'm not the type that believes in Facebook relationships. I thought I’d give it a try anyway.

We started talking online and later exchanged numbers. After chatting for a while he came to visit me in Johannesburg as he's based in Cape Town. We both fell deeply in love and a month later he bought me a flight ticket so that I could visit him. It was the best weekend ever. We both wanted the same things and we clicked in so many ways. When I returned to Joburg we video called each other every night.

Things became serious and he applied for a job transfer to Joburg. Sadly the application was declined. He was heartbroken and so was I.

Despite the setbacks our love grew stronger and we both agreed that we never felt this way before, but things weren't going our way.

He started to have car trouble and had to spend R35 000 to fix it. It's then that he started losing hope. He said he is broke and doesn't have much, but wants me so bad.  I told him I'm used to relationships where responsibilities are shared and he must know that he doesn't have to carry this burden alone. We agreed to continue our relationship, but with distance and all the struggles doubt started creeping in.

After trying to make things work we decided to part ways because we didn't want to waste each other’s time.  It was the most painful decision for the both of us since we loved each other so much. We both still have hope that one day we will be together.

Every now and then he calls me and tells me he can't cope without me and wants me back – I want him too. But right now I cannot see a future with him.  This situation has taught me that breaking up with someone doesn't mean you don't love them and staying with someone doesn't mean that you do.

We are both miserable because we know we love each other and we want to be together, but we can't and there's nothing we can do about it.  I'm hurt and confused and hope that God will make a way for us.
