And expert psychologist Dr. Jane McCartney says getting away from it all is the best way to improve our outlook on life.

“It’s state of mind that makes us happy, not the things we have,” she explained to Cover Media. “And having unique and personal experiences can have a huge impact on our outlook.”

We all know that taking a break can be good for the soul - but choosing the right holiday to heal body and mind can be difficult. If you’re struggling to cope with work stress then the hustle and bustle of an unknown city may not help things.

Dr. McCartney says those fretting about their job should use their holiday to find peace and quiet and get back to nature.

She explains: “The best thing for work stress is to find some solitude and immerse yourself in natural beauty – be mesmerised by manta rays in Hawaii on an amazing snorkeling trip, or a hiking trip is a great option to find the mental space to be calm.”

Conversely, for those feeling down after a big upheaval like a break-up, she suggests an adrenaline fuelled city break with plenty of activities to take your mind off life’s woes.

A holiday can also be a great chance to get in shape by getting active - something the psychologist says can be combined with sightseeing somewhere far away from home.

She says combining an activity like cycling through a major city such as Los Angeles while seeing the sites can get “your heart and interest racing” and will help look after your “heart and mind”.

Ultimately though, Dr. McCartney notes the most important decision you can make when going on holiday is to try new things.
