5 ways to survive (and enjoy) Valentine’s Day when you’re single

accreditation

I swear there is no day in the year that makes you more aware of how dry your WhatsApp is than the 14th of February. Valentine’s Day – a day that has been commercialised as an exclusively romantic day you can’t help but wonder if you are also allowed to celebrate it as a single person. Well guess what? You don’t have to cringe at every red rose you catch in your peripheral view wishing that at least one of them were yours because singletons can also have fun today.

Here’s what you can do:

Don’t text

If you suddenly miss your ex today, it’s probably best to either delete their number or block them from all your social media because this is surely the worst day to be needy. You can unblock them tomorrow if still being in touch with them is not detrimental to your self-care. Better yet, just don’t charge your phone at all today. Let it die a slow death…like your love life.

Shoot your shot

No, this is not an inappropriate pun on “a bullet for my valentine”, but rather a courageous act that may pleasantly surprise you. Maybe you’ve had your eye on someone for some time now, so today might be the day to swallow your pride and test the waters. If it doesn’t go as expected you can always just say your phone got hacked, “What? Who sent you that?

Bless yourself

You don’t need a marriage certificate to buy some chocolate and a bottle of champagne. Spoil yourself and even go the extra mile by buying yourself a luxury fragrance. Why stop there? Go on and buy yourself the latest smartphone, a car, a house! You go, Glen Coco.

Censor your social media

If words such as “crush”, “bae”, “relationship” and “cuddles” trigger you, make that Twitter mute button your friend today. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life today. Just go to your account settings and look for the notifications option, where you can enter the words you want to mute. Sorted.

Squad goals?

Some people would just really rather not spend this day alone, so it’s probably the best day to have a girls’ night out and make the lovers miss their single days. Just kidding. But really, though, what better way to show love than by dressing up, getting your face beat and rolling with your squad because sometimes our soulmates are our friends. Besides, being single isn’t worse than being in a relationship. It’s just different.
