Interracial relationships are still viewed as something out of the ordinary, although we are now more tolerant. South Africans are still battling with racism and racial stereotypes, which can make having interracial relationships tricky.
Psychotherapist, Hanlie Raath says that while the world has become more tolerant, people may underestimate the powerful impact of cultural differences and believe that love alone suffices. "Love by itself isn't enough to make a relationship successful. One has to look at the total picture, especially if the relationship is to be a long-term one," she says.
Raath says cultural differences can affect many delicate decisions about social relationships, religion, financial responsibilities and attitudes towards child rearing that will ultimately form the foundations of the relationship.
Like all relationships, interracial unions must be based on love but it is important that cultural differences and approaches be taken into consideration and discussed.
