Can I get an STD from oral sex?

Q: Can I fall pregnant from pre-cum? My boyfriend suggested we use the pull-out method and I wanted your opinion.

A: The function of pre-ejaculate is to adjust the pH of the urethra from urine- to semen-friendly.

While the likelihood is slim, it’s still possible to fall pregnant as pre-ejaculate can contain sperm, even though low in concentration, or semen ejaculate directly after the pre-ejaculate can enter your vagina.

I advise against the pull-out method. Not only is it high risk for unplanned pregnancy, you’re not protected against sexually transmitted infections. Condoms are my recommendation. As nothing is 100% guaranteed, dual protection against pregnancy (using a condom and being on a contraceptive pill) wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Q: What are the chances of contracting something from oral sex?

A: Because of the exchange of bodily fluids, there’s a possibility of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and/or HIV. The possibility increases with cuts and sores on the lips, in the mouth and genitals. Condoms and dental dams reduce your risk.

Q: My girlfriend is 26 and she prefers anal sex, but she bleeds every time. Is it safe to continue?

A: In your case I suggest that your girlfriend listens to her body. Anal sex can lead to some bleeding, ample lubricant makes penetration easier and reduces the chances and/or severity of bleeding. If the bleeding is excessive, then I advise against it. Instead of anal-penile penetration, try anal beads and butt plugs as they may be smaller and less intrusive than a penis, but equally stimulating.
