Putting the fun in fundamentalism

accreditation
This year's Sexpo, held at the CTICC was all it advertised to be. Lots of dildos, lots of naked breasts, lots and lots of penis jokes and sweaty abs and red lights and pole dancing. A veritable smorgasbord of sex and fun with a generous helping of sleaze. And while I wouldn't have wanted my grandmother (may she rest in peace) there with me, I wouldn't have been squeamish if my mom was there.

Because it's just sex, people, and I'm pretty sure my mom has seen a hell of a lot more of it than I have… but only because she has a 35-year head start, mind you.

So what tickles me about the placard-carrying religious lot is that they act as if they've invented sex and us godless folk are hell-bent on destroying it. Making it "dirty". Taking it from the sanctity of marriage and laying it open for everyone to explore.

As if this is somehow wrong.

These are the type of religious people who think God invented the missionary position and that everything else is somehow perverted. The lot who scoff at evolution. And at the notion that sex is a primal, undeniable, animal instinct necessary for the very survival of the species.

Anyway, I'm very sorry Mr Bible-thumper, but your idea of an all-male holy trinity with a celibate father figure watching your every sexual move is a lot freakier than me liking it from behind.

Now before all you normal religious people start gathering stones, I'm not talking to you guys. I come from a Christian family and I have a lot of Christian, Moslem and Jewish friends whom I respect equally. Each to his own and all that. You're welcome to pray for me.

I'm talking to the guys who had the following arguments:
That the Sexpo encourages people to rape and abuse women.
That sexual openness leads to the dissolution of marriage and morals.

Hello? Can someone please explain to me what sex toys have to do with morality? Maybe we need another lesson? Last time I checked it was quite easy to spot right from wrong.

Wait... Let me take a stab at it: it is immoral to have sex workers work outside of the protection of the law where they can be exploited and abused without compunction. It is immoral to let gay people believe they'll burn in the eternal fires of Hell. It is immoral to expect a woman to go from a kiss to a fuck in the space of one night – her wedding night. It is immoral to pretend that sexual enlightenment causes people to commit despicable acts of sexual violence when it is indeed caused by ignorance, gender inequality and misguided patriarchy. It is immoral (and stupid) to preach abstinence as a method of birth control and HIV prevention.

Why are the "good people" focusing on harmless banalities like bondage, group sex and things that go "whirr" in the night when real issues like rape, child abuse and rape, sex trafficking, genital mutilation and wife beating have reached pandemic proportions in our society?

Do you think sexual emancipation is enlightened or evil? What are the true sins? Leave your comments in the box below.
