Sex toy review : Anal gadgets

accreditation
Getting through a booty bucket list can be far more challenging than you’d imagine. Especially when it comes to ticking off adventures in anal sex. As a newbie it’s not something I’m likely to suggest to my unsuspecting beau on our second date (soooo, would you be open to deflowering my sphincter later tonight ... no pressure) and you’ll be surprised to know how difficult it is to find a guy who’s open to pegging (I’m a firm believer in the goose/gander theory).

So I decided to try some anal toys. This is a really great way to experiment if you're shy or a newcomer to anal, because you'll have the chance to go at your own pace and get really comfortable with your anatomy and what feels good for you before inviting someone else to join you.

Butt why?

The concentration of nerve endings around the sphincter and the proximity of the prostate (the male 'g-spot') and a woman's g-spot, means that the anus can provide a whole new dimension of pleasure and intensity to your orgasm.

Safe play

Anal tissue is very sensitive and should be treated carefully to avoid tears or irritation. Because the anus doesn't lubricate the way a vagina does the first rule of anal play is to use LOTS of lube.

Actually, relaxation and lube are the two first rules of any rear-end rendezvous.

The second rule of anal play is to only use toys that have handles or 'stoppers'. You know those stories of the strange objects found up people's rectums? The sphincter is a very strong muscle and will snap right shut after it's let something in. The 'handles' on anal toys prevent this happening and allow for easy removal.

Use only high-quality, hypoallergenic, phthalate-free 100% premium silicone or non-porous products like glass or metal. All of these can be boiled, bleached and washed with soap, which is good because you want to keep your toys super clean. You can also use a condom on your toys.

Butt plugs - Bootie by Fun Factory

Butt plugs often come in the shape of elongated diamonds or triangles.

Unlike dildos that slide in, butt plugs are literally 'plugged' in and held in place by the sphincter muscles, which clench and unclench according to stimulation, providing heightened pleasure and a sense of pressure and fullness.

This is the case with the Bootie, which is slightly curved to provide extra stimulation to the prostate (if you're a guy) and the g-spot (if you're a woman).

Which brings me to my favourite suggestion for butt plugs.

While they're great for masturbation (since you don't have to keep it in place, your hands are free to concentrate elsewhere), butt plugs are awesome to use if your guy's penis is a little on the diminutive side. See, butt plugs - and especially this one that curves - push against the vaginal canal, effectively narrowing it and providing more pressure on whatever is inserted in the vagina.

Dildos - Silk Small by Tantus

Dildos of whatever shape are different to vibrators in that they don't have a buzzing mechanism. They're simply a penetrative toy.

If you're new to anal play you'll probably find this unassuming and unintimidating Silk Small very appealing. Perfect to explore anal penetration by yourself or with a partner, it also comes in especially handy as a dilator, ie a toy to help your muscles relax for penetration by something a little bigger.

I really enjoyed this one, but found that as far as solo going is concerned it can get tricky to multitask clit stimulation and keeping the dildo inserted. Because it's so smooth and because sphincter muscles clench easily, the dildo is inclined to easy its way out.

Luckily its length and slight curve keep it pretty steady.

Anal beads - Flexi Felix by Fun Factory

Typically, anal beads are smooth, round spheres resembling a short strand of large beads, with some type of handle at one end. The idea is to gently insert the beads one at a time into your anus and then pull them out one by one or all at once, generally at the moment of orgasm.

Because the outer sphincter of the anus has many nerve endings, this movement of the beads can intensely arousing, while on the inside the inner sphincter responds to the pressure the beads create.

I can't say I was thrilled to try anal beads, especially one that sports a cheesy smiling 'beetle face' on top of a long worm-like figure. But for beginners, the Flexi Felix is perfect. The beads aren't too big and they strike just the right balance between firm and flexible.

While the beads were easy to use during solo play, it takes some practise to co-ordinate something as simple as popping out beads - especially in one swift motion - while you're coming. Better to have a partner to tease and tug on this one.

31 cm in length
