Confessions of a Shopaholic

Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella (Black Swan)
"I count out the money in tens and twenties and wait almost shivering as she ducks behind the counter, and produces the green box.
"She slides it into a thick glossy bag, with dark green cord handles, and hands it to me.

"I almost want to close my eyes, the feeling is so wonderful. "That moment.
"That instant, when your fingers curl round the handles of a shiny, uncreased bag – and all the gorgeous new things inside, it becomes yours. "What's it like?

"It's like going hungry for days, then cramming your mouth full of warm, buttered toast. "It's like waking up and realising it's the weekend…"

Confessions of a Shopaholic is the story of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and ambitious 25-year-old, Rebecca Bloomwood, who works as a financial journalist at a monthly publication (if you can call re-writing press releases and calling it your own, journalism).

Rebecca's working day consists of attending the odd press conference where she pretends to listen to the host while sipping on one too many glasses of champagne. But who cares about interest rates when lunch time roles around – and you can quickly pop off to one of the many stores on Oxford Street and revel in the purchase of a pretty cardigan or two, or three…

Never mind the endless stream of bills and lawyers' letters slid under her front door on a daily basis or that pesky bank manager that just won't leave her alone. That's the last thing that'll stop Rebecca from getting her hands on that prized scarf, or that pair of shoes, oh and don't forget that buy-two-moisturizers-and-get-a-lippie-and-blusher-for-free special.

Despite her flailing attempts at saving money, 'resistance' is clearly not a word in Rebecca's dictionary.

And to make matters worse, she's sure that top entrepreneur and one of Britain's wealthiest men, Luke Brandon, sees right through her charade and knows that she knows nothing about finance at all.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and being a shopaholic myself, I totally related to the heroine of the story – minus the debt, of course!

A deliciously entertaining read.
